FINE ART GICLEE

What does Giclee mean?

Giclee (pronounced 'zgee-KLAY'). The term derives from the French verb gicler, which means 'to squirt'. It describes the process in which the ink is laid on the paper, 100% cotton canvas or Fine Art papers favored by the artists.

It can be so color-true that is virtually indistinguishable from the original.

What is a Fine Art Giclee reproduction?

Giclee print also known as Fine Art reproduction, Giclee Engraving or Iris print. It is considered a real work of art reproduced with inkjet digital technology with ”injet” archival quality, using State of the Art technology.

Giclee is regarded as the finest reproduction technique of original Art works currently available.

What is the durability and stability of a Giclee artwork?

Giclee has been reviewed by leading authorities in the sector such as Wilhelm Imaging Research (independent research laboratory) in the maintenance and care of Fine Art Giclee prints in photographs and works of art, showing that this type of reproduction depends on the following factor:

• The reproduction inks used

• The brackets where they are printed

• The contaminants agents such as light and air

We print with 12 pigmented Vivera inks on chlorine free certified Fine Art papers, such Hannehmuhle papers, and a indoors HP guarantee of durability up to 200 years before significant alterations of color appear.

What is the durability of a Giclee Print compared to silkscreens or lithographs?

As far as we know there is no analysis in this regard, even so, it is important to say that in every work of art there is discoloration, depending on the composition of the used inks or paints, in fact, there are many watercolors that fade and are less stable than the Giclee engravings.

How to take care of Giclee prints or Fine Art reproductions?

These works of art must be handled with great care. We recommend the use of gloves for handling, mounting or framing.

As with every work of art, it is recommended the use of protection such as an UV approved varnish, glass or acrylic and to keep it away from direct sunlight.

Although our inks are water resistant, contact with water should be avoided.

Do galleries and museums work with Giclee prints?

There are many museums and art galleries around the world i.e. the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum in New York or the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston that are exhibiting Giclee works of Art. Indeed, as these works are reproduced with such an State of the Art quality is quite normal to be part of their collections.

PRINTING TECHNIQUE AND COLOR MANAGEMENT

Which is your printing technique?

As a system or printing technique, for professionals we print on a technical large format HP - Z3200 44 " equipment, with the color accuracy of 12 Vivera pigmented inks, with a chromatic red ink giving more vividness and intensity to the reds. We offer lasting impressions in approved fine Art papers, with a durability of more than 200-year and Fine Art Giclee exhibiting quality in black and white and color.

We incorporate the satin finish intensifier for photographic papers reducing the metallic appearance or bronzing.

Our high quality Fine Art Giclee prints are made by depositing tiny drops of ink of variable size, controlled with great precision using the finest Pico liters available in the market with a line accuracy of + /-0,010 mm, resulting in images of exceptional quality.

We create specific profiles for each type of paper and through the laser spectrophotometer offers 95% coverage of the Pantone palette.

So we are able to produce images with a color up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution, optimized from 1200 x 1200 input dpi, there are currently no other printing systems working with better resolution. In our Printing Technique section, you can learn more about our Color management and printing system.

Can I print in black and white with absolutely neutral grays?

Of course, at IndieColors we have a photographic professional team capable of printing images in grayscale (black and white), with 3 or 4 black inks and completely neutral grays without any color deviation.

Does the reproduction vary depending on the technique used in the creation of the work?

There is no difference in the printing depending on the original work of art technique, being paintings, drawings, graphic art or photography, it rather depends on the image resolution, the color management and the profiles created for the different printing media selected for the final work.

So, the main factor when proceding to print is to consider the printing media due to the necessary good color management with ICC profiles and perfect calibration to get a printing with the best quality and color accuracy.

Problems can to arise when there has been lack of quality control during the digitization and the color management stages of the work since this is when the printing process starts. A bad scan or bad calibration will result in an impression without quality control. No doubt.

Our printing system has several quality options, high quality printing involves some loss of speed, while quick printing involves some quality reduction.

These controls allow us to activate a print mode to the maximum detail, notably improving the quality and clarity of the final printing, this system only may be used in circumstances where the work file contains higher resolution than the resolution necessary for processing.

What are ICC profiles?

The ICC profile, is a format for color communication between different devices.

In an ICC profile, we have the color response of the technical equipment with all their working conditions.

ICC profiles are mainly divided into:

•Input profiles such as a scanner or digital camera, in their case we will need color chart and profile creator software.

•Output profiles of printing equipment, in their case we will need a spectrophotometer, a profile software creator and printing software.

• Monitor display software profiles, we will need a hardware device and monitor calibration software.

The first thing we need is to install them in our computers and to configure the preferences or Color management of the programs.

Using these ICC profiles, we will know beforehand the color we will be getting when printing our work without surprises.

We have ICC Profile Downloads to control Color Management of your print.

Which are the picture qualities and color management required?

To obtain a high quality digital print send your images or photos with as much information as possible having taken into account the Color Management when capturing the photography, its conversion, the monitor management and the color space in the program you work with.

The lack of quality control that could exist in the work digitalization or its color management will result in a print without quality control.

Do you provide a color or print test prior to final printing?

IndieColors provides free of charge before your final print a color test of or file printing test so you can make all the corrections deemed appropriate on your screen before the final printing. These standard tests of your file will be printed on your selected final printing paper. The print test has a size of 15,5 x 21,5 cm, and you will only be charged shipping costs.

PRINT TEST

All our equipment, monitors and print devices, are calibrated and adjusted. We also generate and maintain constantly updated all our ICC profiles and Color Management processes controlled to continue offering the highest Fine Art quality reproductions.

No, at IndieColors we print according to your demand. It is not necessary to store works without an intended destination.

Thanks to our Color management and printing technique, on top of the HP DreamColor technology with a built-in spectrophotometer which provides functions of calibration and profile management, we achieve precise and uniform colors achieving 95% coverage of PANTONE® MATCHING SYSTEM and PANTONE® Goe System.

Average <1.6 dE2000, 95% of colors <2.8 dE2000. This is important since it allows us to create specific profiles for any paper and obtain consistent results of the same work using any media at different times without any variability compared to the first prints.

Another important thing for you to know, is that there are sometimes slight variations of paper characteristics, even within the same pack. These variations can alter the outcome but in an almost imperceptible way.

Is there a minimum or maximum size for printing?

• Shorter side: printed surface 100 cms. + margin of 6/11 cms for mounting or framing
